Ordering a custom hat
The Couture process
Maria will meet you at her home studio for a one hour consultation. You will discuss your event and timeline. Maria will measure your head and discuss what hat shapes work best for the overall look and face proportion.
Please bring your dress or a fabric swatch to make sure she can match your outfit to the hat material chosen.
A 50% deposit is required before any work can begin. If you need your hat order sooner than later a surcharge fee may apply.
We accept all major credit cards, Venmo and Paypal.
Proper hat fit: Measuring for your head size is both an art and a science. You can use a tape measure (or a length of string that you will have to hold up to a tape measure) to determine the length. Place the string or tape around your head about 1/8" above your ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. Basically you need to measure your head exactly where the hat will sit. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
Maria sources most of the millinery *materials she uses from all over the world.
She works with the following:
straw, sinamay, buntal, jinsin
dye to order
custom hat blocks
* Most materials are shipped from overseas and may take longer than expected to arrive in the U.S. They could be held up in customs delaying your order.
To book an appointment to discuss having a couture/bespoke hat made, email Maria Etkind.
To ensure you have your hat in time for your special event like Mardi Gras Parades, Fall luncheons and Weddings we advise that you plan ahead and get in touch with Maria as soon as possible.
